Counselling & Psychotherapy

Counselling is a form of therapy that is typically focused on addressing specific problems or issues in a person's life. It is often a shorter-term process, lasting anywhere from weeks to months, and the focus is on developing strategies to manage symptoms and improve overall functioning. Counsellors may use a variety of techniques, such as various talk therapies, cognitive-behavioural therapy, or exposure therapies to help clients work through issues related to relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, grief, and more. With younger people (10+) we might use various expressive modalities including drawing, play-doh, LEGO® Based Therapy.

Psychotherapy is a more in-depth therapeutic approach focused on developing a deeper understanding of issues, patterns of behaviour, and ourselves. It is often a longer-term process, lasting several months or years. The focus is on uncovering and addressing underlying issues that may be contributing to mental health issues, relationship problems, and more. Psychotherapists may use a variety of techniques and modalities depending on their training, such as psychodynamic therapy or gestalt therapy, or sometimes somatic or art therapies to help clients explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in a safe and supportive environment.

Trauma therapy may include the use of a variety of memory reprocessing modalities like Brainspotting, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing), EFT (Emotion Focussed Therapy) and/or parts work, like IFS (Internal Family Systems). These are all things you can google and get a feel for if you want to. However, you do not need to know whether counselling or psychotherapy is best for you before you start, or what type of modalities you want to use that can be something that is worked on together in your initial assessment, and over time.

At SJP Wellbeing we are highly trained and degree-qualified. We undertake extensive and ongoing professional development in a wide variety of techniques and modalities to make sure that no matter what it is that you are dealing with, we remain adaptive to your needs, being person-centered at ALL times. It’s our job to manage the space and to facilitate your journey, but you are in control of where we go and how we go there.

Our therapists have a range of specialties and experience, on purpose so that we are never using a one-size-fits-all approach, our initial assessments are aimed at discovering enough about who you are and what you’re dealing with that we can work on making sure that not only do we use the right modalities, but that you are with the right therapist for you.

At SJP Wellbeing we use a holistic family approach recognising the need to support the whole family system for therapeutic change.

Our other therapists have a range of qualifications and specialties, please get in touch to find out more.
